Job Description
· Provides engineering and technical support new product designs, legacy products in production and for welding operations in fabrication/manufacture of products. Researches and develops concepts, designs, materials, functions, and performance, fabrication test, and modification of products. Selects materials for welded applications, develops weld procedures for new materials. Researches and recommends weld processes, identifying limitations and capabilities. Prepares, conducts, and evaluates Weld Engineering analysis/documentation, test/examination, performance and procedure qualification in compliance with customer requirements and applicable welding standards and specifications. Utilizes knowledge of metallurgy, material alloy weldability, and welding processes for material selection and weldment design. Reviews subcontractor/vendor capabilities for compliance with government/customer specifications. Provides technical assistance/guidance to design engineers, manufacturing and welding personnel. May manage technical activities for assigned projects or programs. Conceptualizes, designs, and invents as required. Develops or contributes to the creation of welding standards and specifications. Develops special weld repair procedures as needed. Ensures technical outcomes are consistent with established engineering principles and practices and that customer and company technical, system, performance, and quality requirements are met.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities Creates, plans, and performs complex engineering design, development, analysis, experimentation, test and/or product assurance tasks for a portion of a project or may lead these activities for a small project. Ensures tasks meet cost, quality, schedule, and performance requirements. Applies wide range of engineering design and/or analytical theory, principles, techniques, and practices to a complex portion of a technical project. Applies broad knowledge of the design of organization's products, technology, systems interactions to solve complex engineering problems which have not been clearly defined and may not have similar precedents available. Responsibilities include Review and approval of engineering drawing or model (ProE) weld joint design, weld size, weld symbols, welding producibility, welding metallurgy and specifying appropriate non-destructive tests. Specifies steel and aluminum alloys for welded applications using knowledge of weldability and metallurgy of steel and aluminum alloys and with metallurgical and mechanical testing techniques. Utilizes failure analysis techniques such as scanning electron microscopy to perform root cause analysis of welding related failures. Applies aspects of a number of welding codes including AWS and MIL-spec documents to assure weld quality in delivered products. Provides shop support for special welding procedures, repair procedures, welder qualification, project surveillance, and NDT is occasionally, which could be at any one of US Combat Systems sites. Performs, at the request of supply chain, to assist and evaluate external suppliers and subcontractors. Performs independent research in developing welding procedures and evaluating advanced technology joining processes is also required.
Develops and writes technical documentation, makes revisions to existing documentation, and provides input to technical papers or presentations. Delivers technical presentations. Performs technical analysis, testing, calculations, and evaluation of results to solve complex engineering problems, using specialized equipment, and/or by creating or using computer programs, models, or simulations. Prepares and presents project technical results, recommendations, and solutions to internal and external customers. Provides input and status to project leaders on technical content, cost, schedule, and workload requirements. Develops and maintains effective relationships with customers to resolve complex technical problems and implement solutions. Provides technical review and guidance to other engineers in area of expertise. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of relevant engineering discipline(s), industry practices, trends, and applications. Advises management on new developments and programs. May direct the work of less senior technical personnel. Must be a US citizen Education: BS in Materials, Metallurgical or preferred Welding Engineering with 5 years experience or MS with 3 years experience.
