It may be hard to believe with U.S. unemployment at 9.9%, but there are positions out there employers are having a tough time filling — and it may give some hope to those long out of work.
The hardest workers for employers to find right now are those in the skilled trades, the traditional blue collar jobs that require apprenticeships like sheet metal workers, welders, plumbers, electricians, according to Manpower Inc. The key here is experience.
And, as companies gear up for a better company, there is also strong demand for sales representatives.
That's a big change from Manpower's top talent in demand in 2009 — engineers and nurses. Engineers dropped to eighth this year and teachers fell off the top 10 list.
“The Hardest Jobs to Fill report is consistent with what we are experiencing in L.A. and Orange Counties," said William Marzullo, Manpower's metro regional director in Los Angeles. "Skilled trades continue to be hard to fill due to the overall lack of qualified candidates."
He noted that skilled trades workers traditionally are more difficult to findbecause they require longer periods of education and training.
The sales rep jobs are a direct reflection of the economy, Marzullo said.
"As the economy struggles, there will continue to be a push on sales for revenue-driven companies," he said "As companies push harder and harder for sales, they are both adding and replacing sales representatives at a higher rate; creating a higher demand for quality candidates. The demand for direct placement sales representatives is increasing in the Metro LA area."
Marzullo said companies are also investing in new and filling previously open professional level positions such as managers, executives and doctors.
"This is consistent with our experience and provides cautious optimism as we did not see this kind of investment from companies last year," he said.
He noted increases in sectors where Southern California has an abundance of labor resources, such as hospitality and customer service, has the potential to have the greatest impact locally.
"It's these skill-sets we see frequently during our regular and targeted recruiting," Marzullo said.
Still difficulty finding workers is a relative problem. Last year 19% of employers said they were having problems finding people. This year it's 14%.
